Sunshine at Work - Part I

TBVSI Raised Beds - TBVSI Service Hours
Q: How many UT Microbiology researchers does it take to mix and shovel
nearly a half-cubic yard of soil?
A: Three!
That is...if they are Alex Lukasiewicz, Sean Leonard and Katy Elston doing their Spring TBVSI Hours. They all happen to be science comrades at UT and they decided to knock out their TBVSI Hour by helping to rebuild the soil mix for the TBVSI All Access beds. They made this huge task seem easy and fun!
Yes folks, indeed, we four garden-nerds talked bacteria, bees and aphids to pass the time as we worked.
These three did Bed #2 a week after Michael Kersey, Paige Dunlap and Paresh Patel helped for several hours with Bed #1 while also co-staring in the soil amending educational video which was released last week. See both finished beds in the photo below or in our new video.
There are still more, smaller bedding-mix refreshes to complete. If you want to do one, message Charlotte Jernigan on Slack or email charlotte@cybermesa.com.
For other TBVSI Service tasks, contact your Zone Coordinator or see listing on SCG website.
New Logo
Our new logo was designed by Isabelle Encela and Anthony Sanchez to improve both usability and recognition. A survey was used to allow SCG members to select their favorite of two options. The one chosen has a wonderful "retro" vibe, reflecting our garden's origins in the late-1970's, while also being eye-catching, warm and welcoming. Thanks to our artists!
While keeping the spirit of Sunshine's origins, our new logo will be phased in and, as you can see, it even gives a wink to our old logo.
This year, 2021, is our 45th anniversary year! We are the oldest organic community garden in Texas. Our SCG lineage dates back to 1978 when the name "Austin Community Gardens" was used. We moved to our current site in 1983, eventually changing our name to Sunshine Community Gardens.
Around 1998-99, Ila Falvey negotiated a trade with local metal artist, Barry George, to get a sign made for our entrance. Ila traded an old vintage wheel barrow, with antique wheels, in exchange for creation of the sign. So, our sign is actually a found-objects sculpture by Barry, who still has his welding arts studio on Adika Street in east Austin. Enjoy this short video about Barry.
Barry's art was eventually "logoized" based on a photograph that had a live bird sitting on the "H".
We pay tribute to the old while welcoming the new! See photos of our sculpture-sign below taken by SCG members Xiaoqiang Wu and Jeff (his photo posted with no surname so not sure which Jeff.)
