December 31 Deadline for Working 2021 Service Hours
The 2021 Spring and Fall service hour seasons have been combined and gardeners must work all the combined hours by December 31st.
Gardeners should check the Green Binder (on the Sunshine website) to verify the hours worked and recorded and do the following if appropriate:
- Record hours worked but not recorded,
- Complete and record unworked hours,
- Request waivers if gardeners believe they are eligible, or
- Report any errors in Green Binder data to the Sunshine secretary.
Micah 6 November Totals and December Donation Request
by Walter Kuhl
November Totals:
- Produce - 279 pounds
- Dry Goods - 71 pounds
Year to Date Totals:
- Produce - 4207.5 pounds
- Dry Goods - 453.5 pounds
Currently, delivery to Micah 6 Food Pantry is once a week, usually around 9am on Saturday. Please leave your donations in the cool room or the refrigerator in the trailer. There are sacks, both paper and plastic, in the cool room if needed. You may also leave donations in the cooler on the trailer porch if you are not comfortable entering the trailer.
Thank you all so much for your donations. Traditionally Micah 6 gardeners donate lots of dry goods in December. So if you want to help out, but don't have broccoli or greens to spare, donations of dry goods like canned goods, peanut butter, and healthy cereals are most welcome.
Happy Holidays to all!
All-Gardener Meeting Tuesday, December 14, 7pm
The quarterly All-Gardeners meeting will be Tuesday, December 14, at 7:00pm. The meeting will again be conducted via Zoom. The agenda will include financial and plot reports, 2022 proposed budget, service hour pilot, and TSBVI replacing the Sunshine perimeter fence. The Zoom link to sign in will be sent out via email.
Recommended Holiday Recipe:
Sherried Sweet Potatoes with Chipotles and Sage
Maria Beach highly recommends Lucinda Hutson's savory sweet potato casserole recipe, Sherried Sweet Potatoes with Chipotles and Sage as a holiday dish. She writes, "I bought a copy of Austin author Lucinda Hutson's Herb Garden Cookbook not long after I started gardening at Sunshine in the late 1990s. When the Austin American Statesman published her fabulous sweet potato casserole recipe around the turn of the century I knew I had to try it. It's one of our holiday traditions now. I've cooked it almost every year since for Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year's Day. Often I double the batch and freeze half of the uncooked sweet potato mixture, thawing the second half and baking it for another occasion. I served it at the last Sunshine Holiday Potluck we had before the pandemic (December 2019) and many people complimented me and commented on the sophisticated flavors in it. It is a vegetarian dish and could easily enough be made vegan by replacing the butter with coconut oil or another vegan-friendly fat and omitting the parmesan cheese or subbing a vegan cheese replacement."
Maria still cooks from her two-decades old newspaper clipping, but the recipe was also published in Mother Earth Living in 2010. Here is the online link
Nancy Seibert Memorial at Sunshine
Approximately five dozen gardeners and family members attended the December 5th Memorial and Celebration of Life for Nancy Siebert on December 5. This photo shows a portion of the friends gathered to remember her.
Garden Tasks
10 December, 2021
Priority (Tasks specifically needed):
- Workday Saturday 12/11/2021 09:00 - 12:00
- A hearty Thank You to those who have participated in our last 5 work days, the next workday will be Saturday, 11 December. There are several tasks that we will be attempting to complete, depending on how many folks show up.
- Maintaining common paths and common areas. If you have plants extending into common paths, trim them. The common paths are designed to allow the biggest wheelbarrows that we own to traverse them unimpeded.
- Mowing and maintaining perimeter fence line inside and out.
- Sunshine Community Garden was fined a few weeks ago for the dumpster being
over filled. Please help us to avoid this by following a few simple
guidelines.
- Fill the dumpster from the back (under the hinges) to the front. If you put stuff in the front, it tends to stay there.
- If you think the dumpster is full, contact me (Steve Camp, I'm there a lot) or Randy Thompson. We can usually compact stuff to make more space.
- Follow the rules regarding what goes into the dumpster and what does not, there's signage close by.
- If the dumpster actually does get full before pick up day, I'm working on finding a spot where we can store a reasonable overage, to be loaded after the dumpster is emptied.
- If you're done with your project, please close the lids.
TSVBI:
- Weeding paths in TSBVI garden and wood chip areas on west side. (This is normally needed. Try to get out roots. Be sure to smooth out paths after weeding to facilitate TSBVI students moving around garden).
- Mowing between fence and street along 49th St. and Sunshine Dr. along and 10' inside fence. (Frequent mowing will be needed this time of year.)
- Picking up trash in compost area and along fence lines.
- Cleaning street curb gutters of dirt and debris build up. (At places in the curb gutter along Sunshine Dr. and 49th St., soil and debris has built up and grass beginning to grow. Scrape off with shovel and put in wheelbarrow. If debris is gravel can be put in low places in parking lot. Otherwise, put in dumpster.)
Regular:
- Mowing (Please check area around trailer and greenhouses.
- Maintaining common paths. (Gardeners are required to maintain a 2' strip of common paths adjacent to their plot.)
- Mowing and cleaning up overgrown/messy places in common areas.
Note: TSBVI hour tasks can also count as regular hours.
Slow Down..You're on Garden Time! Enjoy!
