Volunteer Opportunities
Workdays
Saturday 19th December, 10:00 - 12:00
Sunday 20th December 1:00 - 3:00
There will be workdays on both Saturday and Sunday. The special project will again be completing clearing of gardens around the trailer. Significant progress was made the past two workdays but more clearing is needed.
Because a number of the tasks qualifying for TSBVI hours are currently not available, the hours spent on this special project this weekend will again qualify as TSBVI hours. Gardeners must participate in one of the workdays for the hours to qualify as TSBVI hours.
Workday leaders will be Christopher Schroder (Zone 10 Coordinator) and Ila Falvey (Zone 4) on Saturday and Ila on Sunday.
Service Hours
Service hours for fall season must be completed and recorded in virtual Green Binder by 12/31. Tasks gardeners can perform are:
- For TSBVI Hours
- Mowing and edging as needed along Sunshine and 48th streets - inside and outside of fence
- Cleaning up in compost area
- Weeding TSBVI Garden paths [Nut grass should be removed at roots. Stirrup hoe works well for other weeds. After weeding, the paths need to be raked smooth.]
- Adding woodchips on west side of TSBVI Garden by sidewalk
- For Regular Hours
- Mowing as needed areas other than fence lines along 48th and Sunshine streets
- Cleaning trailer
- Maintaining common areas - particularly common paths
- Removing weeds inside greenhouses
- Cutting large woody stems (okra, sunflower, etc) in compost pile into 2-3 ft lengths)
- Removing Kakhi weeds
Remember to record your hours if you want to get credit and not be charged !!!!!!
Micah 6 Holiday Food Collection
We are still collecting non-perishable food items to deliver to the Micah 6 Food Pantry during the holiday season. There is a collection box in the trailer. Because of missing items, the collected items are being removed to a safe place often and delivered on our regular delivery day. Many thanks to all who have contributed.
Next Weeder Comes out December 30-ish.
I am still working on cleaning up the list so some of you may still get test emails. Thanks for being so understanding.
Current copies of the Weeder will be posted on the notice board in the trailer.
Please Don't Forget to Donate Veggies to Micah 6!
The Micah 6 Food Pantry is very grateful for any donations of extra vegetables that Sunshine Gardeners can give!
We deliver harvested vegetables to the Food Pantry on Saturday around 9 am. The volunteers will add Thursdays at 3pm for delivery when we have more produce. The donated vegetables can be left either in the refrigerator or the Cool room of the trailer. The Micah 6 Food Pantry is one of the best in Austin, partly because of fresh produce from our community garden! The food pantry is in full operation during the holidays because the need is always there. The volunteers receive expressions of gratitude every time we drop off our donations of fresh organic produce. We make a difference to our community, but with your help, we can do more!
